10.1.1 Safety requirements

Do not use cutting wire to remove special add-on parts.

Special add-on parts must cure at least 3 hours after being bonded before work on the vehicle is continued.

10.1.2 Preparing add-on part for installation

For 2-pack window adhesive (⇒ Electronic Parts Catalogue “ETKA” )

For 1-pack window adhesive (⇒ Electronic Parts Catalogue “ETKA” )

  • The bonding surfaces of the add-on parts must be prepared with plastic primer.
  • Apply 2-component glass adhesive at specified positions on attachments, using double cartridge gun - VAS 5237-.
  • Apply 1-component glass adhesive at specified positions on attachments using hand cartridge gun - V.A.G 1628-.

For double-sided adhesive tape

  • Clean bonding surface for double-sided adhesive tape thoroughly with adhesive remover.
  • Apply double-sided adhesive tape along defined bonding surfaces without stretching and without creating wrinkles.

10.1.3 Preparing body component

  • Remove any adhesive residue of double-sided adhesive tape with adhesive strip remover (⇒ Electronic Parts Catalogue “ETKA” ).
  • Cut back adhesive points of PUR adhesive (⇒ Electronic Parts Catalogue “ETKA” ) to about 2-3 mm without damaging paintwork.
  • The cut surfaces do not require additional cleaning.
  • The cleaning guidelines for surrounding components are to be observed ⇒ 10.1.6 Cleaning off excess adhesive.
  • New special add-on parts may be attached immediately at the prescribed positions with the adhesive points.

If the body part has been repaired or partially renewed, the area concerned must be cleaned and primed again after painting.

Apply activator evenly in one stroke using applicator (⇒ Electronic parts catalogue “ETKA” ).

The activator must not come in contact with paint, or the paintwork will be damaged.

Drying time approx. 10 minutes.

Touching up paint damage

Paint structure must be restored according to specifications in the ⇒ “Paint” workshop manual.

10.1.4 Installation instructions for bonded addon parts

  • Remove adhesive residue using adhesive remover (⇒ Electronic Parts Catalogue “ETKA” ).
  • Clean application area for adhesive bead twice thoroughly using cleanser named in repair procedure and allow to dry.
  • Apply glass/paint primer evenly and in one stroke using applicator (⇒ Electronic Parts Catalogue “ETKA” ).
  • Allow to air dry for approx. 10 minutes.
  • Apply adhesive sealing material to primed areas of attachment parts.

10.1.5 Minimum curing period for bonded addon parts

The minimum curing period for newly bonded special add-on parts is 3 hours.

The minimum curing time is the time from bonding the add-on parts until the vehicle may be used. During this time, the vehicle must be standing on a level surface at room temperature (at least 15°C).

10.1.6 Cleaning off excess adhesive

  • If necessary, remove escaping adhesive with a piece of cardboard.
  • Clean painted surface as well as possible using a dry cloth.
  • Remove residual dirt using adhesive remover (⇒ Electronic Parts Catalogue “ETKA” ).

10.1.7 Cleaning guidelines

  • Carry out cleaning immediately before installation.
  • First, clean outer panel with adhesive remover (⇒ Electronic Parts Catalogue “ETKA” ).
  • Then use plastic cleaner to carefully remove dirt, grease, wax and other contaminants.
  • Always use a clean, lint-free cloth for cleaning.
