Removing and installing handbrake cable (drum brakes)

4.1.1 Removing

  • Remove centre console ⇒ General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr. 68; Compartments, covers and trims.
  • Release handbrake.
  • Loosen adjustment nut -arrow- until handbrake cable can be unhooked from compensator.
  • Raise vehicle.
  • Unscrew hexagon nuts -arrows 1- and press underbody panel -arrow- down until handbrake cable guide tube -arrow 2- becomes visible.
  • Remove wheel.
  • Remove brake drum.
  • Unhook handbrake cable from handbrake lever.
  • Pull handbrake cable out of brake backplate.
  • Unclip handbrake cable from retainer on rear axle beam -arrow A- and unhook from retainers -arrows-.
  • Pull handbrake cable out from guide tube -1- in direction of arrow.

4.1.2 Installing

  • Slide handbrake cable into guide tube on underbody.
  • Insert handbrake cable into brake backplate.
  • Engage handbrake cable onto handbrake lever.
  • Install brake drum.
  • Clip handbrake cable into retainer on rear axle beam -arrow A-.
  • Handbrake cable clamping ring must lie in the middle of the clip.
  • Hook handbrake cable into retainers -arrows-.
  • Attach handbrake cable to compensator.
  • Pretension the handbrake cable with adjustment nut -arrow-.
  • Fit wheels.

Specified torque of wheel bolts ⇒ Running gear, axles, steering; Rep. gr. 44; Specified torques of wheel bolts.

  • Adjust handbrake ⇒ 4.2 Adjusting handbrake.
  • Secure underbody panel.
  • Install centre console ⇒ General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr. 68; Compartments, covers and trims.
