Removing and installing valve timing housing (Eos, Golf Plus, Scirocco, Golf, Polo, Sharan, Golf Cabriolet)

Special tools and workshop equipment required

• Support - 10-222A-
• Adapter - 10 - 222 A /8-
• Counter-hold tool - 3415-
• Pin - 3415/1-
• Torque wrench - V.A.G 1331-

• Torque wrench - V.A.G 1332-
• Silicone adhesive sealant - D 176 501 A1-

3.1.1 Removing

• Lift engine cover panel at points -1- and pull it forwards in direction of -arrow-.
• Remove noise insulation.
• Remove front right wheel housing liner ⇒ General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr. 66; Removing and installing wheel housing liner.
• Mark the direction of rotation of the poly V-belt and remove belt ⇒ 1.3 Removing and installing poly V-belt (Golf Plus, Eos, Scirocco, Golf, Touran, Polo, Sharan, Passat, Passat CC, Golf Cabriolet).
• Turn crankshaft in direction of engine rotation to TDC for no. 1 cylinder ⇒ 4.1 Checking valve timing.
• Drain coolant ⇒ 1.6 Draining and filling coolant (Polo).
• Remove coolant pump ⇒ 2.3 Removing and installing coolant pump (Polo, Touran, Golf Plus, Eos, Tiguan, Scirocco, Golf, Golf Cabriolet).
• Remove banjo bolt from oil supply pipe to turbocharger.
• Remove air conditioner compressor from bracket with refrigerant lines still connected ⇒ Heating, air conditioning; Rep. gr. 87.
• Remove bracket for tensioning element and air conditioner compressor.
• Remove alternator.

Scirocco

• Install support device - 10 - 222 A- with adapter - 10 - 222 A /8- as shown and hook into lifting eye.
• Position adapter - 10 - 222 A /8- on vehicle front end -arrows- as shown.

All vehicles

• Install support device - 10 - 222 A- with adapter - 10 - 222 A /8- as shown and hook into lifting eye.

• Take up weight of engine and remove securing bolts -arrows-.
• Remove sump ⇒ 1.3 Removing and installing sump.

• Now remove pulley securing bolt. Hold pulley with counterhold - 3415- and -3415/1-.

• Remove Allen head bolts for valve timing housing and hexagon bolts indicated by -arrows-.
• Remove valve timing housing.

3.1.2 Installing

• Clean sealing surfaces carefully. They must be free of oil and grease.

• 1 Securing bolt
• 2 Crankshaft belt pulley
• 3 Diamond coated washer (clipped onto crankshaft belt pulley)
• 4 Crankshaft oil seal
• 5 Bearing bush
• 6 O-ring
• 7 Diamond coated washer

• Apply silicone adhesive sealant - D 176 501 A1- to joints between camshaft housing and cylinder head -1- and between cylinder head and cylinder block -2-.
• Fit new gasket onto dowel pins.
• When fitting, install two -M6x80- studs into cylinder head and cylinder block as a guide.
• Fit valve timing housing with crankshaft bearing bush simultaneously onto studs, dowel pins and crankshaft journal.
• Tighten valve timing housing securing bolts evenly and diagonally.

Ensure that valve timing housing is not canted.

Specified torque:

M6 bolt to 10 Nm

M10 bolt to 50 Nm

Eos, Golf Plus, Scirocco, Golf, Golf Cabriolet, Sharan

Align engine mountings as follows:

• There must be a distance -a- of at least 10 mm between engine support and longitudinal member (right side).
• The side surface of the engine support -2- should be located parallel to the support arm -1-.

Polo

• Rock engine to align engine mountings stress-free.

Install crankshaft belt pulley ⇒ 1.7 Removing and installing crankshaft pulley.

Further assembly is basically a reverse of the dismantling sequence.
