Valve gear – assembly overview and fastening

1 40 Nm + ¹/4 turn (90°) further
- Left-hand thread
- Renew
2 Camshaft adjuster
- Must not be dismantled.
- Removing and installing ⇒ 4.2 Adjusting valve timing
3 Camshaft sprocket
- Note position when installing timing chain.
4 O-ring
- Renew if damaged
- Before installing, coat lightly with engine oil.
5 Inlet camshaft control valve
1 N205-
6 10 Nm
7 10 Nm + ¹/4 turn (90°) further
- Renew
- Tighten from inside outwards.
8 Camshaft case
- Removing and installing ⇒ 1.2 Removing and installing camshaft housing
- Remove sealant residue.
- Before installing, coat with sealant - D 154 103 A1-.
- When installing, carefully fit onto dowel pins from above.
9 10 Nm
10 Cap
- For inlet camshaft
- For exhaust camshaft
11 Roller rocker fingers
- Check roller bearing.
- Oil contact surface
- When installing, secure to supporting element using securing clip.

- Renew
14 Support element
- Check oil spray holes.
- With hydraulic valve clearance compensation.
- Do not interchange
- Before installing, check camshaft axial clearance ⇒ 2.2 Measuring axial clearance of camshaft.

16 Valve springs
- To remove and install with cylinder head removed, use valve spring tool - 3362-.
- With cylinder head installed ⇒ 2.5 Removing and installing valve stem seals.
17 Cylinder head

18 Valves
- Do not rework; only lapping-in is permitted.

19 Exhaust camshaft
- Do not interchange with inlet camshaft.
- Checking axial clearance ⇒ 2.2 Measuring axial clearance of camshaft.
- Coat with oil before inserting (also axial bearing shoulder).

21 Inlet camshaft
- With cam for high-pressure pump
- Before removing, remove and renew bucket tappet for high-pressure pump.
- Do not interchange with exhaust camshaft.
- Checking axial clearance ⇒ 2.2 Measuring axial clearance of camshaft.
- Coat with oil before inserting (also axial bearing shoulder).
22 50 Nm + ¹/4 turn (90°) further
- Renew
