Removing and installing cylinder head
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Support - 10 - 222 A-
- Adapter - 10 - 222 A /8- (Golf Plus, Eos)
- Adapter - 10 - 222 A /22- (Tiguan)
- Bracket - T10358-
- Torque wrench - V.A.G 1332-
- Torque wrench - V.A.G 1331-
1.3.1 Removing
Remove following components:
- Removing and installing valve timing housing (Eos, Golf Plus, Golf, Scirocco, Polo, Sharan, Golf Cabriolet) ⇒ 3.1 Removing and installing valve timing housing (Eos, Golf Plus, Scirocco, Golf, Polo, Sharan, Golf Cabriolet)
- Removing and installing valve timing housing (Tiguan, Touran)
- Remove valve timing housing (Passat, Passat CC)
- Remove thermostat housing from cylinder head.
- Remove timing chain ⇒ 4.4 Removing and installing timing chain and chain drive for oil pump
- Remove turbocharger ⇒ 1.2 Removing and installing turbocharger.
- Remove regulating flap control unit - J808- and throttle valve module - J338- ⇒ 2.2 Removing and installing regulating flap control unit - J808- and throttle valve module - J338-.
- Removing intake manifold ⇒ 2.1 Assembly overview - intake manifold.
- Unscrew securing bolt for gearbox and attach bracket - T10358- as shown.
- Attach hooks of support bracket - 10 - 222 A- to bracket - T10358- as shown.
- Turn spindle until the hooks are lightly tensioned.
- Unhook hook -1- from left lifting eye and push spindle onto left side of support bracket - 10 - 222 A-.
Removing and installing camshaft housing ⇒ 1.2 Removing and installing camshaft housing.
- Remove roller rocker fingers together with support elements and lay aside on a clean surface.
- Ensure that roller rocker fingers and support elements are not interchanged.
- Loosen cylinder head bolts in sequence given and then remove completely.
- Carefully remove cylinder head.
1.3.2 Installing
Condition
- The pistons cannot be positioned at TDC.
- Place clean cloths in cylinders so that no dirt or emery cloth particles can get in between cylinder wall and piston.
- Now carefully clean sealing surfaces of cylinder head and cylinder block. Ensure thereby that surfaces are not scored or scratched (if abrasive paper is used, grade must not be less than 100).
- Carefully remove metal particles, emery residue and cloths.
- Set No. 1 cylinder piston to top dead centre and then turn crankshaft back slightly.
- Fit new cylinder head gasket. Inscription (Part No.) must be readable.
- Fit cylinder head. When doing this, observe centring pins in cylinder block.
- Insert new cylinder head bolts and tighten hand-tight.
- Tighten cylinder head in sequence as follows:
Specified torque/turning further angle

- Install supporting elements in cylinder head and fit respective roller rocker finger onto respective valve stem end or supporting element.
- Install camshaft housing.

Further assembly is basically a reverse of the dismantling sequence.
